CRAA® Certification Renewal FAQs

Here we've complied the most frequently asked questions related to maintaining your CRAA® certification, including how to properly use the certification marks you worked hard to display.

  • Certification Renewal

  • What is a Certification Period?

The Certification Period for all CRAA® certificants runs from June 1 to May 31.

A Partial Certification Period refers to any certification duration of less than 12 months that ends on May 31. This only applies when you first obtain CRAA® certification, as your initial certification may begin mid-cycle.

  • How much are the Certification Renewal Dues?

As of January 1, 2024, the Renewal Dues for CRAA® certification are USD 249. Please note that Renewal Dues are non-refundable and non-transferable.

Please note:  RPII may modify or change these terms at any time in its discretion.

  • Are there any late fees if I miss the Certification Renewal deadline?

Yes. If you do not complete all certification renewal requirements by May 31, a late fee of USD 50 will be assessed immediately. You then have 30 days from the renewal deadline to fulfill all outstanding requirements.

If you do not complete your renewal between 31 days and 2 years after the applicable May 31 deadline, a USD 150 late fee will apply.

Additionally, a non-refundable administrative fee will be applied for returned checks or dishonored credit card charges.

Please note:  RPII may modify or change these terms at any time in its discretion.

  • If I do not complete the Certification Renewal process, can I still use the CRAA® Certification Marks?

No. If you do not complete the Certification Renewal process within 30 days after the May 31 deadline, you will receive a Suspension Notice. Upon issuance of this notice by RPII, your status in the CRAA® Certificant Records will be updated to "not certified", and you will no longer be authorized to use any CRAA® Certification Marks.

For information on how to reinstate your CRAA® certification after receiving a Suspension Notice, please refer to the Certificant Reinstatement section.

Unauthorized use of CRAA® certification marks after suspension may result in legal consequences.

  • If I do not renew my CRAA® Certification, will I have to retake the CRAA® Exam?

If you do not reinstate your certification within two (2) years of your last active Certification Period, your certification will be permanently abandoned and cannot be reinstated. To regain the right to use the CRAA® Certification Marks again, you will need to retake and pass the CRAA® Exam and fulfill all current certification requirements in effect at that time.

  • CONTINUING EDUCATION (CE) REQUIREMENT

  • What do I need to complete the CE Requirement?

All CRAA® certificants must complete a minimum of 26 credit hours of continuing education (CE) during each Certification Period. Of the 26 CE hours, 24 hours must be related to any real assets topic or knowledge domain and 2 hours must specifically consist of focused on Ethics in Professional Conduct.

CE hours must be documented and submitted according to RPII guidelines. See the Continuing Education section for more information.

  • I just obtained CRAA® Certification. Does the CE Requirement apply to me?

Generally, not immediately. For new CRAA® certificants, depending upon when you are awarded CRAA® certification, the initial CE Requirement starts on June 1 (the start of your first full Certification Period). After this, you must fulfill the requirement on a 12-month basis.

For example, if you earn the CRAA® designation on November 1, 2024, the CE Requirement becomes effective June 1, 2025 and must be completed by May 31st, 2026.

Ensure you document and submit your CE hours in accordance with RPII guidelines.

  • How do I submit proof that I have satisfied the CE Requirement?

To submit proof that you have satisfied your CE Requirement, follow these steps:

    • Complete the CRAA® Certification Renewal Process:  When you renew your certification, you will be given the opportunity to report your Continuing Education (CE) Hours.
    • Provide an Attestation:  You can indicate your completed CE Hours, including the required two (2) Ethics in Professional Conduct CE Hours, by attestation during the renewal process. This attestation confirms that you have met the CE Requirement for the closing Certification Period.
    • Prepare for Possible Audits:  RPII may conduct audits to verify the completion of the minimum CE credit hours. Ensure you maintain detailed records of your CE activities to facilitate any potential audits.

By following these steps, you ensure that your CE compliance is properly documented and verified.

  • What content qualifies for CE Hours?

To qualify for CE Hours, the content must enhance your professional competence and knowledge of real assets. Here’s what you need to know:

    • Real Assets Focus:  For the 24 CE Hours related to real assets, there are no specific subject area mandates. The content should generally pertain to income-producing real assets.
    • Relevance to CRAA® Program:  Educational content should align with the CRAA® Program Curriculum, Body of Knowledge, and Learning Objectives.
    • Professional Development:  Courses, seminars, or activities designed to refine and enhance your knowledge, skills, and abilities as a real assets professional are eligible.

  • How do I determine CE Hours based upon my qualifying professional activities?

To determine CE Hours for qualifying professional activities, follow these guidelines:

    • Basic Conversion:  One CE Hour equals 60 minutes of qualifying continuing education activity. For CRAA® purposes, the minimum CE content of any qualifying activity must be 0.25 Hour (15 minutes).
    • For Readings and Review:  Use either the actual time spent on the activity or 3 minutes per page for a minimum of five pages of substantive content. For example, if you spent 45 minutes reading a report, you can claim 0.75 CE Hours. Alternatively, if the content is at least five pages long, you can claim 0.25 CE Hours.
  • What happens if I do not complete the CE Requirement before the end of the Certification Period?

If you do not complete the CE Requirement on or before May 31, the following will occur:

    • Grace Period:  You have a 30-day grace period to fulfill the CE Requirement. During this time, you can still complete the requirements to avoid suspension.
    • Certification Suspension:  If the CE Requirement is not completed within the 30-day grace period, your CRAA® certification will be suspended. The suspension can last up to two years.
    • Certification Revocation:  If the CE Requirement remains unmet after the two-year suspension period, your CRAA® certification will be revoked.
  • What documentation do I need to prove my CE Hours?

Although you are not required to submit documentation with your renewal, RPII recommends that you keep records of your CE activities for 12 months beyond your Certification Period. This documentation should be maintained in case of a compliance audit, during which you may be asked to provide proof that you have met the CE Requirement.

  • Can I carryover excess CE Hours from one Certification Period to the next?

No. CE Hours cannot be carried over from one Certification Period to the next. All CE Hours must be earned within the applicable Certification Period. Additionally, you cannot "stack" or claim CE Hours for reviewing the same qualifying continuing education content multiple times within the same Certification Period. Each CE Hour must be earned through distinct educational activities.

  • Certification Mark Usage

  • I have multiple certifications / designations. Is there a recommended order for listing them behind my name?

Congratulations on your multiple certifications and designations! The order in which you list your certifications or designations is a matter of personal preference.

However, we request that you present all your marks in a consistent stylistic manner and separate them with commas. This ensures clarity and maintains a professional appearance.

  • Do I say I am a CRAA® candidate or a CRAA® certificant?

The appropriate term to use depends on your status in the CRAA® Program:

    • CRAA® Candidate:  You should refer to yourself as a CRAA® Candidate if you have enrolled in the CRAA® Program and are registered to sit for the CRAA® Exam. This designation indicates that you are in the process of pursuing certification but have not yet completed all requirements.
    • CRAA® Certificant:  You can use the title CRAA® Certificant only after you have successfully completed the CRAA® Certification process and received written approval from RPII. This approval is formalized through an approved CRAA® Certification Application, which confirms that you have met all necessary requirements and are authorized to use the Certification Marks.

In summary, use "CRAA® Candidate" while preparing for the exam and "CRAA® Certificant" once you have been officially certified and approved.

  • Can I alter, phrase differently, or abbreviate one of the Certification Marks?

The CRAA® Certification Marks Usage Guide provides a comprehensive list of approved nouns for use with the Certification Marks. When referring to an individual who holds the certification, you may use one of the following approved nouns:

  • Reinstatement

  • How do I reinstate my certification?

If more than thirty (30) days have passed, your right to use the CRAA® Certification Marks will be revoked. To reinstate your certification, you may be required to pay a late fee as well as a reinstatement fee, depending upon the timing of payment, and meet other renewal conditions to regain your certification privileges.
